Item Details
Description
Roman North Africa, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. This lamp is one of the mass produced, mold-made pottery lamps from Roman North Africa. It has a rich, deep color, especially around the nozzle, where it has darkened from use. It has a sunken discus, two pour holes on either side of the central design, an unpierced lug handle, and double spouts. The design on the discus of this lamp is a Chi Rho. It is surrounded by shapes of arrows and circles, done in the delicate, stippled style of lamps from this time and place. The outer circle has many small designs of this same style. Size: 7.1" L x 4.25" W x 2.6" H (18 cm x 10.8 cm x 6.6 cm)
