Description
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A beautiful mold-formed pottery oil lamp with a discoid base and a planta pedis (maker's mark), gently-expanding walls with a rounded shoulder, a pierced tab handle, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole, a large wick spout, and a volute-adorned neck channel. Within the recessed tondo is a stylized wolf in low relief, depicted in a striding pose with incised nodules for hair, perky ears, and a conical snout. A fabulous example covered in a red-orange slip. Size: 2.7" W x 1.6" H (6.9 cm x 4.1 cm).

Condition
Minor nicks and abrasions to handle, body, wick spout, and base, with fading to areas of original slip pigmentation, light char marks to wick spout, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label within tondo.
