Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca 1st to 2nd Century CE. A petite and intriguing terracotta oil lamp, embellished with a chocolate glaze, depicting a bas-relief bull striding right in profile on the recessed tondo just above the fill hole. The depiction of the bull is not surprising given the featured role of the bull in Roman religion e.g. the Mithraic mystery cult. Incised concentric circles followed by a foliate design at wick hole. Size: 3.75" L x 2.625" W (9.5 cm x 6.7 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
