Description
Late Roman/early Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A cast bronze oil lamp with a loop handle topped by a deep crescent form, which probably once had a cross form inset into it (see condition report). The bowl stands on a round, slightly raised foot, and likely once had a lid based on similar known examples. There delicate bronze chains are attached at the middle of the crescent and the sides of the bowl, rising to a larger bronze ring with a large bronze hook attached to it for suspension. Size of lamp: 5.05" L x 2.5" W x 2.25" H (12.8 cm x 6.4 cm x 5.7 cm); height with chain raised: 10.75" H (27.3 cm)
