Description
A rare carved wooden Songye fetish figure known as "katatora" or "Kakishi" and features a classic Songye face with tall antelope horn, as well as a ring shaped form and accented with metal tacks. Traditionally this form is used in a divination ritual, although this example seems a bit large so exactly how it was used is a mystery, though it does appear to have good handling and some age.In preparing for the ritual, the kakishi is rubbed with aromatic leaves, invoking the diviner's consulting spirit. The diviner will be informed of the client's concerns. Seated on a mat, they will each grasp the kakishi with their first two fingers, therefore the divining instrument creates a bridge between diviner and client, linking the diviner's insight to the client's experience.Songye peoples, Congo, West Africa. The sculpture measures 21 inches tall.
