Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderfully-preserved iron axe with a thin blade that tapers to a flared cutting edge, a short butt, and a lightly decorated socket. The axe was not a weapon of war for the Romans, who fought in tightly controlled formations and used more precise techniques, but it was still an incredibly versatile and valuable weapon for the legions who would have used it to chop wood and construct bridges, camps, and earthworks. Size: 6.8" W x 2.2" H (17.3 cm x 5.6 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
