**First Time At Auction**
Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A cast-iron axe head comprised of a circular socketing shaft with a thick flat butt and a curved blade bearing a sharpened edge. Four indentations on the socket indicate areas for rivets to secure this axe head on a shaft or pole. A thick mottled brown and black patina covers the surface. Axes of this petite size were probably used for utilitarian purposes such as chopping wood or shaping mud bricks, and they also may have been used as votive pieces to be buried with the deceased. Size: 4.5" L x 2.5" H (11.4 cm x 6.4 cm)
