**First Time At Auction**
Western Europe, Germany, Medieval Period, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A pewter badge with openwork and a depiction of a woman desecrating wafer hosts. The woman is leaning over and shaking a cloth that holds 45 consecrated hosts into a well. There is an inscription below her feet. People of the Middle Ages went on pilgrimages to the tomb of a saint, or a site where relics of a saint(s) were venerated. The pilgrim might pray at a shrine in order to thank the saint for miraculous healing or a cure. Badges, such as this one, were purchased as consecrated souvenirs, however while most badges depict a saint or holy person, this badge depicts a witch committing sacrilege. In Germany, Alheyd Pustekoke was burned as a witch after stealing holy wafers and throwing them down a well. A church was built over this well and miracles began to happen. The church became a popular pilgrimage site, and these badges were in high demand, despite the sacrilegious imagery. Size: 2.75" L x 1.75" W (7 cm x 4.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
