Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 100 to 400 CE. An impressive cast iron adze or axe head, with a curved wide blade, a rather long oval eye perforation, and a thick squared butt end. The blade's face dramatically flares to a broad cutting edge. This axe head has an ovoid socket for mounting on a shaft or handle. This hefty piece would have been used for carving some serious woodwork! Size: 11" L x 3.25" W x 2.5" H (27.9 cm x 8.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
