Description
Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A large, heavy deep brown stone mace head, once attached to a wooden shaft and capable of inflicting serious damage on foes. It is carved and smoothed to have a round form with a wide lip around the upper part of the socket and a discoid shape above a conical socket flare. The socket itself is fairly wide, made to accommodate a strong pole. Size: 4" W x 3" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired before 1995
