**Originally Listed At $650**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A beautifully-preserved stone mace head made from a dense, pale grey stone. The conical base has a central socketing hole; the body's exterior is covered in carved, raised spikes. Significantly, the Chavin culture does not seem to have been warlike, and their cultural expansion across the landscape was not violent - at least as far as archaeologists can find - until the very end of the period, when maces like this suddenly become evident. Was this an actual weapon used in war? Or was this a status symbol made to be put into a grave? Many mysteries about this early culture remain. Size: 3.75" W x 4.75" H (9.5 cm x 12.1 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
