Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A miniature seated anthropomorphic figurine, hand-carved from a mottled brown stone with light inclusions. The figure rests in a sitting position with both legs bent in front of a diminutive body, hands folded across its abdomen, with a straight back and flush shoulders. The abstract, minimalist visage is displayed on a conical head and is comprised of drilled circular eyes, a broad nose, pursed lips, and a planar brow. A biconically-drilled suspension hole is situated horizontally behind the head, suggesting this was worn as an amulet or was intended as a funerary offering. Polished to a reflective sheen, this is a fabulous example of early Pre-Columbian miniatures! Custom museum-quality display stand included.
