Description
Pre-columbian Olmec Stone Mace Head from Mexico, ca. 1000-400 B.C. Depicting were-jaguar motifs on both impact faces. Faces are dramatic and feature mouths with drilled corners, a feature usually reserved for larger stone masks. Also, stylized ears are present. This would have been an important cache item and it does have traces of ritualistic cinnabar on all sides. Although it may have been used just for harmless ritual, it's hard not to image marking enemies or prisoners, with this were-jaguar deity club head.
