Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze statue of a bear, perhaps intended to be a juvenile based on its shape. Bears were known to the Romans, but are rare in Roman artwork, often associated with the Orsini family. However, exotic or fierce animals were always a favorite of Romans (something that we can relate to today); so, the bear is part of that tradition. Here the bear has a thick, unruly coat, a thin form, and a slouching gait, shown striding forward, with its mouth partially opened. The figure stands on an integral rectangular platform. Size: 2.6" W x 2.25" H (6.6 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.2" H (8.1 cm) on included custom stand.
