Description
Roman Empire, ca 1st to 2nd century. Wonderful example of ancient Roman bronze! Very fine bronze buckle or military phalera in the form of a hippocamp (hippocampus) and eagle. The hippocamp was a Greek & Phoenician mythological beast comprised of the upper section of a horse and the lower section of a fish. Also seen in Etruscan art, it was borrowed in Roman art and often seen in mosaics and in marble sculptures. Hippocamp swims left with an eagle holding onto its mane flying right. On the reverse are two large rivets for attachment. Custom base. Size: 3" W x 2.5" H (7.6 cm x 6.4 cm)
