Item Details
Description
Rome, ca. 50 BCE to 300 CE. This is a beautiful bronze inkwell, constructed of several pieces, with a delicate scrollwork incised and cast decoration on either end and a rectangular space for ink in the center. Roman upper and middle class children were educated in reading and writing (as well as arithmetic and history), and literacy rates in ancient Rome were high relative to many other places and times. Important documents, such as legal contracts, were written with pen and ink on papyrus. Atramentum librarium is the Roman Latin word for writing ink. An inkwell like this would have had a lid to keep dust and other foreign elements out of the ink! Size: 2.45" L x 2.4" W x 1.6" H (6.2 cm x 6.1 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - private New Jersey collection formed between 1960 and 1985
