Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze handle in the form of a fierce leopard springing forward, ready to attack. The leopard was almost always portrayed in this manner by the Romans, and was a popular imported beast to be seen in menageries and, more commonly, in their local colosseum. The animal is depicted here as sleek, with incised lines forming ribs on its sides. The paws of the leopard are each on an integral, flat bar for attachment to a cauldron, piece of furniture, or other item. Size: 2" W x 2.55" H (5.1 cm x 6.5 cm)
