Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A black-glazed pottery guttos (oil-pouring vessel) of a characteristically squat and rounded form with a single conical spout, a ring-form handle attached at the shoulder, and a rimmed fill hole. The exterior walls are decorated with a repeating register of incised vertical lines, with two small arches between each line along the shoulders, and a small, impressed palmette leaf in the middle. A guttos like this example would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to fill oil lamps. Size: 4.75" L x 4" W (12.1 cm x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s
