1743 ENGLISH Works of Hesiod Greek Philosophy Theogony Homer Mythology Cooke
“He who neither thinks for himself nor learns from others, is a failure as a man.”
– Hesiod
A rare printing of the works of Hesiod, a Greek poet who is thought to have been a peer of Homer. Only three surviving works have been attributed to Hesiod, of which, Theogony is the most famous. Theogony describes the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods, beginning with the first gods through the children of Zeus and the life of Prometheus. Hesiod had a profound effect on early Greek philosophy, early rhetoric, and the development out of archaic religious beliefs.
This 1743 English edition of Hesiod was translated out of the original Greek by Thomas Cooke. It also features a bust portrait of Hesiod engraved by Nathaniel Parr.
