Description
Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine, hand-carved face mask meant to represent a Spanish Catrine (dandy), likely worn and danced in the Baile de los Catrines (Dance of the Dandies) in Guatemala. The mask is depicted with a prominent nose, a bulging forehead, carved-out eyes and mouth, as well as a moustache, beard, and coiffure comprised of intricately-carved spirals. Two lateral perforations as well as one top perforation are used for suspension. The Catrine mask, traditionally a Mexican creation, is worn with large textile costumes and grand hats by individuals of lower socioeconomic status to imitate and mock those with wealth and status. Covered in a lustrous chocolate-brown patina, this is a fabulous example from Guatemala! Size: 4.875" W x 6.75" H (12.4 cm x 17.1 cm).
