Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Figure of a Squirrel-on-Stump, probably Thomas Haig, Jr., Philadelphia, PA, third quarter 19th century, molded figure of a feeding squirrel, seated in the crook of a tree stump, the surface decorated throughout with brushed cobalt slip highlights. The distinctive color of the clay and cobalt on this figure suggest it was made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, most likely at the pottery of Thomas Haig, Jr. Provenance: Sotheby's, American Folk Art, Furniture, and Related Decorative Arts: The Collection of the Late Pauline Heilman, York, Pennsylvania, York Interstate Fairgrounds, July 16 and 17, 1982. Restoration to base and ears. H 4 5/8".
