Description
Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Iron-Oxide Decoration, Stamped "GR" Beneath a Crown, English origin, circa 1725, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and ribbed strap handle with three impressions to lower terminal, the surface covered in an appealing dipped iron-oxide slip with overlying salt glaze. Impressed below the spout with the initials "GR" below a stylized crown with cross finial. A stately piece, exceptional in its large size and elusive impressed markings, which indicate use by the British Army. The jug's discovery in New England offers the possibility that it was brought to the American colonies by British troops during the second quarter of the 18th century. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, acquired by the consignor in New England over thirty years ago. A 1 1/4" x 7/8" chip to underside at edge, possibly in-the-firing, and some faint lines in underside, also possibly in-the-firing. H 16 1/2".
