Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Bearsville, WV Stoneware Advertising Pitcher, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid pitcher with tall flaring collar, the front decorated with a freehand 2 flanked by flourishes, above the stenciled advertising, "J.B. & A.W. RIGGS, / DEALERS IN / GENERAL MERCHANDISE / BEARSVILLE. W.VA.", surrounding a stenciled foliate motif. Collar decorated with three columns of freehand dashes. Freehand stripes to rim, base of color, and twice along body of pitcher. Brushed cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. Rare Tyler County, WV advertising on an exceptional, large-sized pitcher form. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Extensive restoration throughout pitcher, including large areas of painting to the cobalt. H 13 1/2".
