Description
Ancient seas, ca. 400 million years ago. This is a fossilized shell of an ammonite, an extinct marine mollusk that was related to the living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The fossilized rock displays shades of cream, beige, and gray with some orange-hued inclusions. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. Size: 6" W x 6.25" H (15.2 cm x 15.9 cm); 11.25" H (28.6 cm) on included custom stand.
