Description
North America, Canada, Alberta, or USA, Montana, Late Cretaceous period, ca. 71 million years ago. A beautiful ammonite fossil polished to showcase the mesmerizing suture marks that have developed pale beige and umber brown quartzite structures. The wavy formations are on full display, the fractal patterning or suture marks are an aesthetically pleasing natural part of ammonite anatomy and their shapes can help determine species and even time period of existence! This species of ammonite is part of the Placenticeras genus and have been found all over the world - however this likely came from North America. The surface is highly polished and smooth with some areas of fiery iridescence; this is a fantastic display piece for showcasing the natural beauty of this ancient creature! The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. Size: 8.25" Diameter x 1" W (21 cm x 2.5 cm)
