Western Europe, late Jurassic period, ca. 160 to 154 million years ago. A large, fossilized ammonite shell in limestone from the Quenstedtoceras genus, known for the tight spiral and ribbed exterior. This specimen has been full excavated and is three dimensional- the surface also contains few impressions from other marine shells that fossilized alongside this ammonite. Ammonites first appeared during the Middle Devonian Period around 400 million years ago and became especially abundant and widespread in the seas of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, 175 million to 65 million years ago. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled.
