Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A large anthropomorphic figure, hand-carved and string-cut from a dark stone with lighter inclusions. The figure's wide triangular head has a flat nose, recessed eyes and mouth, and a domed forehead; the neckline, eyes, and delineated legs were all formed using the meticulous string-cutting method. Stone figures and masks are nearly all that we know of the Mezcala; we believe that they were probably meant to represent the dead or their spirits. Their geometric forms and use of planes to create human shapes out of a minimum of lines have been inspirational to modern artists. Comes with custom museum-quality stand. Size: 5.375" H (13.7 cm); 5.875" H (14.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
