Japanese Edo / Meiji Stone Seated Deity - Jurojin
Japanese Edo / Meiji Stone Seated Deity - Jurojin
Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji Period, ca. 19th century CE. An enticing stone sculpture depicting Jurojin, the Japanese deity of longevity and one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. Seated with legs bent before him, the cheerful god boasts an ecstatic expression; eyes wide and brows raised high to create a rippling forehead, highlighting his age, as his mouth opens wide in an exuberant smile, enveloped by full cheeks and dimples resembling parentheses. A long beard falls from his chin onto layered leaves on his chest, likely intended as peach leaves as the peach is considered to prolong life in Chinese Taoism. His right hand is raised, perhaps having previously held a cane, while his left hand grasps a scroll that is believed to be inscribed with the lifespan of all living things. Size (from seated surface to head): 8.5" L x 9" W x 16.4" H (21.6 cm x 22.9 cm x 41.7 cm); (from feet to head): 8.5" L x 9" W x 18.5" H (21.6 cm x 22.9 cm x 47 cm)

Jurojin originated from the Chinese Taoist god, the Old Man of the South Pole/Star of the Old Man. He is known as the immortal of the Northern Song dynasty (960?1127) and may have been a historical figure of the period. He is identified as the personification of the Southern Polar Star. While paintings and statues of Jurojin are considered auspicious, he never developed a following independent of the other Seven Gods of Fortune.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
