Pre-Columbian, Colombia to Ecuador regions, Narino Highlands, Narino-Carchi, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A very fine and intricately decorated pottery vessel of a rounded form with a slightly compressed shoulder and flat bottom, the rim adorned with an applied frog - its legs and head (note the incised eyes and mouth) playfully delineated above the walls which are elaborately decorated in black negative resist geometric motifs adorning the burnished red-brown ground. Vessels so highly ornamented such as this were likely uses as offering bowls or votives in ceremonial rituals. The frog (rana) was particularly symbolic in the Pre-Columbian world, as it was associated with rain, the sustenance that it brings about, and fertility. Size: 3.875" in diameter x 2.875" H (9.8 cm x 7.3 cm)
