Pre-Columbian, Colombia to Ecuador, Narino Highlands, ca. 1250 CE. An attractive pair of hand-built pottery bowls, each presenting a wide body and an annular rim atop a petite, circular foot and adorned by fine negative-resist motifs in hues of sienna and cream beneath a lustrous burnish. The basin of the first bowl is divided into 4 equal sections: 2 filled with the silhouette of a monkey, while the other 2 boast lovely step pyramid designs beside target motifs. Alternatively, the second bowl features the image of an avian-esque, anthropomorphic figure standing upon triangular legs and claw-like feet. The fascinating figure holds a long staff or tool in the right hand, while the left hand is placed on the hip. Its rectangular body is divided diagonally by a sash and embellished with 2 stepped pyramid designs. Capped by a headdress, the minimalistic visage features ovoid eyes, a lengthy nose, and a straight mouth. Both ancient vessels display 3 decorative bands encircling their rims. Both repaired from several pieces with restoration over break lines. Nicks, chips, and abrasions to areas commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits and excellent remaining pigment.
