Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Monte Alban, Zapotec culture, ca. 700 to 1200 CE. A wonderful pottery bowl in the form of the head of Camazotz, the Zapotec bat-god. Presenting an annular rim and a flat base, the ancient vessel displays a vicious visage with a pointed nose, beady eyes beneath an arched brow, and a snarling mouth showing sharp fangs, all flanked by a pair of petite, tab-shaped ears that double as handles. Note the carefully incised lines that decorate the cheeks, nose, and brow, adding detail to this expressive piece. Size: 5.75" in diameter x 4" H (14.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
