Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya, possibly Guatemala, Late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 850 CE. This is a fine earthenware cylinder vessel, decorated with incised fine cross-hatching and geometric designs. At one time, this vessel probably had red and black slip over its cream background, but now it is a nearly uniform cream color. This is probably a pot for drinking chocolate. What makes it an interesting and valuable piece is the high quality of its design, which was probably commissioned by a high-ranking individual rather than mass produced. Size: 6" W x 7.2" H (15.2 cm x 18.3 cm)
