Mississippi River Valley / Tennessee River Valley, North America, Mississippian, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A stone axe head, in hues of slate grey and cinnabar, carved by an artisan of the Mississippian Native American culture of the greater Cahokia region, a group known for their mound building. Notable for its large size, this axe is most carefully carved and shaped to aid in utilitarian practices. Size: 11.25" L x 1.625" W x 3" H (28.6 cm x 4.1 cm x 7.6 cm).
