Native American, central/midwestern United States, Eastern Woodlands, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A hand-carved stone hand axe exhibiting dark brown and gray hues. The tool features a pair of deep hand grooves on the sides of the body, a tapered butt end, and a lengthy blade head with gently convex faces and a blunt but large blade edge. Tools like this example were perhaps used for cutting and shaping softer materials like wood rather than for splitting or shaping harder materials like stone.
