Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic Period, ca. 8000 to 1000 BCE. A hand-pecked axe head or hand axe of a broad form with a thick butt end, a rounded blade head, and a smooth groove that encircles three quarters of the circumference, hence the designation: "three quarter groove axe head." The groove enabled the head to be bound to the end of a wooden pole for use a chopping tool or hammer via the blunt butt end. Size: 6.5" L x 2.5" W (16.5 cm x 6.4 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
