**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Colima culture, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An adorable terracotta whistling avian vessel in hues of dark umber, brown, and light orange, with a bulbous body, tucked wings, broad and flat tail, two squat legs to keep its balance, and a stylized head with a narrow beak, circular eyes, and an incised crop of feathers on top. The tail features a blow hole on the topside (for the whistle), and the low-note tone hole lies beneath. Avian forms were embraced in the Pre-Columbian world as sky animals that could serve as messengers between humankind and their deities. Produces a beautiful low-tone! Size: 7.25" L x 4.125" W x 5.75" H (18.4 cm x 10.5 cm x 14.6 cm).

Whistling function still operational. Neck and tail reattached, minor losses to wings, feet, and neck, and surface wear commensurate with age. Some original pigmentation still visible.
