Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautifully-shaped stone mace head - carved, pecked, and string-cut from a caramel-hued piece of alabaster to create an anthropomorphic effigy figure with an expressive visage comprised of coffee-bean shaped eyes, a prominent nose, gently smiling full lips, pierced ears presumably for suspending decorative ornaments, and a cap-like coiffure, a narrow neck (showing nice pecking marks) designed to have leather or sinew bands wrapped around it to attach it to a stick, and a body with four limbs, bent as if swimming, tapering to an axe head. The Colima people made ritual objects that reflected their lives. This mace head was clearly designed to be held as a symbol of power or status. Custom wood block stand. Size: 5.375" L x 2" W (13.7 cm x 5.1 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on stand

Provenance: private Hawaiian collection
