Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautifully-shaped stone mace head made of a grey-green stone, smoothed with sandstone, in a zoomorphic shape with a prominent head, a neck designed to have leather or sinew bands wrapped around it to attach it to a stick, and a body with four limbs, bent as if swimming, tapering to an axe head. The Colima people made ritual objects that reflected the animals they saw around them. This mace head was clearly designed to be held as a symbol of power or status, with no signs of wear or use. Size: 7" L x 1.75" W x 2" H (17.8 cm x 4.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
