Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautifully-shaped stone mace head carved, pecked, and string-cut from a grey-brown stone to create an anthropomorphic effigy figure with a prominent visage comprised of coffee-bean shaped eyes, arched brows, a prominent nose, broad smile, large ear ornaments, and a cap-like coiffure, a neck (showing nice pecking marks) designed to have leather or sinew bands wrapped around it to attach it to a stick, and a body with four limbs, bent as if swimming, tapering to an axe head. The Colima people made ritual objects that reflected their lives. This mace head was clearly designed to be held as a symbol of power or status. Custom stand. Size: 6.75" L x 2.125" W x 3" H (17.1 cm x 5.4 cm x 7.6 cm); 7.125" L x 4.625" H (18.1 cm x 11.7 cm) with stand
