Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche IV, ca. 500 to 600 CE. A really interesting stirrup vessel from the period that saw the greatest expansion of the Moche politically - a dynamic time in the culture when they were producing wonderful art. Under a round stirrup with a thin and unrimmed spout, the body is round, with a wide, flat foot. Handle and spout are an earthy red, while the body is cream with the same red painted to divide it into four quadrants, with a long-tailed and long-snouted lizard in each. This type of vessel was made to be placed into the grave of an elite member of society and the four lizards probably have a symbolic significance, perhaps something to do with the person's name or a mythological story. Size: 6" W x 10" H (15.2 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Ventura County, CA collection
