c. 1800 George Washington ASCENDING IN TO GLORY Large 11 Inch Size Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher
c. 1800 George Washington Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher “ASCENDING IN TO GLORY,” with the Rare Thomas Jefferson Quote Legend Heraldic Eagle, and American Flag Sailing Ship, Large 11” Tall, Hairlines, Very Fine.
This Historical Liverpool Pitcher measures and impressive large size being 11” tall and 6.25” at its base, displaying three large decorative historical transfer vignettes. It was produced for export to the American Market in England as a George Washington Tribute Memorial Display and functional pitcher. The first transfer is: “ASCENDING IN TO GLORY” listed as W.41 on page 206 of Arman’s book titled, “Anglo-American Ceramics” (1998). This example has actual wear from use, some old hairline cracks, in particular with some larger having darker discoloration located at the top of the ship’s mast to the handle and should be considered whole and solid, yet fragile, as such. The Jefferson quote transfer is somewhat doubled on the words “Commerce and” being as made. It shows Washington dressed in his Roman style robes being carried off to Heaven by an Eagle and Angel. The imagery of “Liberty” sits below with her head in her hand mourning, while two other figures watch the ascension. Below, George Washington is a plaque which reads: “Sacred to the Memory of Washington” with his birth and death dates listed. The upper portion of the scene has five Cherubs watching. The other side displays a large Three Masted American Sailing Ship flying a 15 Star American Flag (of a transfer design unlisted in Arman). Under the spout is a large Heraldic American Eagle with flowing ribbon in it’s beak with the motto: “E Pluribus Unum” as the Seal of the United States, listed as S. 17 in Arman, with the historic Thomas Jefferson quote which reads: “Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship with all Nations - Entangling Alliances with None - Jefferson” as listed on page 163 of Arman, which is rarely seen.
