c. 1800 George Washington ASCENDING IN TO GLORY Gorgeous Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher
c. 1800 George Washington Historical Liverpool Creamware Pitcher "ASCENDING IN TO GLORY," with Thomas Jefferson Quote as Legend, Heraldic Eagle and American Flag Sailing Ship, Rare Large 11" tall Size, Choice Extremely Fine.
This stunning Historical Liverpool Pitcher measures an impressive very large size 11" tall x 6.25" at its base. The designs displaying three large decorative historical vignette transfers. This Pitcher was produced for export to the American Market from Liverpool England, meant as a George Washington Memorial Tribute Display as well as being a functional pitcher. The first black vignette transfer is: "ASCENDING IN TO GLORY" listed as W.41 on page 206 of Arman's book titled, "Anglo-American Ceramics" (1998). This example has an exceptionally clean and bright appearance, apparently having been mostly used on display. There is a Thomas Jefferson "quote" transfer, some letters of its text slightly doubled, as made. Another vignette transfer shows George Washington dressed in his Roman Toga style robes being carried off to Heaven by an American Eagle and an Angel. The imagery of "Liberty" sits below with her head in her hand in mourning, while two other figures watch the ascension. Below George Washington is a plaque with text which reads: "Sacred to the Memory of Washington" with both his birth and death dates listed. The upper portion of the scene has five Cherubs watching. On the opposite side a transfer with a large Three Masted American Sailing Ship flying a 15-Star American Flag is displayed (a rare transfer design this is unlisted in Arman). Under the Pitchers spout is a large Heraldic American Eagle with a flowing ribbon in it's beak bearing the motto: "E Pluribus Unum", the Seal of the United States, illustrated and listed as S. 17 in Arman, with the historic Thomas Jefferson quote which reads: "Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship with all Nations - Entangling Alliances with None - Jefferson" which is listed on page 163 of the Arman reference, a quote which is rarely seen and available to collectors. A magnificent, extremely large beautiful "Museum Quality" Pitcher which has both rare content and wonderful eye appeal.
