“Peter Colt” Signed Conn. Revolutionary War Pay Order
PETER COLT (1744-1824). New Haven, CT’s Committee of Correspondence in 1774; Military Secretary to General Wooster; 1777 Continental Congress appointed him Colonel and Eastern Department Deputy Commissary General; he was Treasurer of Connecticut (1789-1793); and was related to the Colt Firearms family.
June 1, 1780-Printed Date Revolutionary War, State of Connecticut,Partially-Printed Document Signed, “Peter Colt,” as Treasurer, being a Military Service Pay Order in the Continental Army, Pass-Co Graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated-63 Superior Paper Quality Rating. This near pristine, bright and fresh measuring 4” x 8” Revolutionary War Pay Order Certificate is payable to Amos Topaz, “who hath served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army.” Listed by William Anderson as CT-18. This CT. fiscal document is boldly Signed “Peter Colt,” in vivid deep bold brown, and guarantees payment by June 1, 1785. Of the 20,000 certificates issued under this Act, only 1,900 were signed by Peter Colt. A great Revolutionary War Fiscal Document in certified Choice Mint condition.
Peter Colt (1744-1824) graduated from Yale University in 1764, and during 1768-1776 was engaged in the West Indies trade with Captain Hezekiah Howe. He was appointed one of the Town of New Haven’s Committee of Correspondence in 1774. The following year, he became Military Secretary to General Wooster. In 1777 the Continental Congress appointed him Deputy Commissary General of Purchases for the Eastern Department (New England and New York east of the Hudson River), with the rank of Colonel. He served in this post through 1779, then in 1780 assisted Colonel Jeremiah Wadsworth in furnishing supplies to the French Troops under Rochambeau. From 1789 to 1793 he was Treasurer of Connecticut. Peter Colt was related to the Colt Firearms family.
