Revolutionary War General William Alexander Lord Stirling
WILLIAM ALEXANDER, LORD STIRLING (1726 - 1783). American Revolutionary War General captured at the Battle of Long Island, later served under George Washington at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth.
November 15, 1765-Dated French and Indian War Period, Autograph Document Signed, “Stirling”, 1 page with endorsement on the reverse, measuring 6” x 4”, (New York), Very Fine. Being his Handwritten Promissory Note in the amount of “Ten pounds New York Money" given unto a John Harris. Some slight show-through from the full, impressive endorsement on verso. Boldly written in rich deep brown and easily readable on period laid paper. Includes an engraving of “Gen. Lord Stirling” with a slight dampstain at lower right corner, his signature in facsimile below his bust portrait in uniform. A rare and important signature of Revolutionary War Continental Army General William Alexander Lord Stirling.
