Stipple Portrait Engraving of “Gen. Wayne” by Benjamin Tanner, New York, 1796, measuring 4.75” x 7.5” on wove period paper. Trimmed just outside of plate mark at left, moderate light tone and foxing, otherwise well printed and nice for display. This rare Engraved Portrait of the General "Mad" Anthony Wayne with the impression dark and crisp. This Engraving is from The New-York Magazine; or, Literary Repository, from 1796, New series--Vol. II. Printed and sold by T. and J. Swords, No. 99, Pearl-Street, New York. Wayne, was a Revolutionary War General who served with Washington at Valley Forge, led his troops to victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and secured the Northwest Territory for the early United States.
Anthony Wayne was a United States Army officer, statesman, and member of the United States House of Representatives. Wayne adopted a military career at the outset of the American Revolutionary War, where his military exploits and fiery personality quickly earned him promotion to brigadier general and the sobriquet Mad Anthony. He later served as General in Chief of the Army and commanded the Legion of the United States. Engraver of this portrait is probably Benjamin Tanner, 1775-1848.
