This original and to our best knowledge Unpublished portrait Photograph is of Daniel Waldo, a historic Colonial, Revolutionary War veteran, Prisoner of War, Chaplain to the House of Representatives, and he lived to see 101 years of age! He was one of the last surviving participating soldiers of the American Revolutionary War. The photograph itself measures 3 3/16” x 2 1/16” and is near mint having no rips or tears. In 1855 he became the Chaplain for the House of Representatives at the age of 93! He lived to see the Civil War, but didn’t see its conclusion. Waldo died in 1864, very soon after this photograph was taken. Accompanied by a Xerox biography of Waldo.
Daniel Waldo was from Connecticut and enlisted for the Revolutionary War. He was captured in 1779 at the age of 17 and was held as a POW in New York City. After his exchange he decided to devote his life to preaching. Waldo graduated from Yale College in 1788. In 1855 he became the Chaplain for the House of Representatives at the age of 93! He lived to see the Civil War but didn’t see its conclusion. Waldo died in 1864, very soon after this photograph was taken.
This photograph is one of two images taken during an interview in 1864 by Rev Hillard who also authored the book on the last survivors of the Revolution. The image of Mr Waldo in portrait is the one used for the book. This unpublished image is the more rare of the two.
There more to research on Mr Waldo and I am providing copies three resources that I found with only a cursory search; approx 15 pages. This includes a copy of the full portrait of him used in the 1864 publication about the last of the Rev War Soldiers.
