Description
DAVID ANDERSON (April 9, 1764-April 26,1836) was born in Halifax County, VA. At an early age, he moved with his father to South Carolina, settling in Laurens District. During the American Revolution, he served in the militia as a substitute for various persons. He returned from the war and established residence near the Saluda River. Through land grants, he received 1,189 acres in Laurens District. At his death, his estate was valued at $15,193 and included 23 slaves. Public service began for Anderson in 1787 when he was appointed sheriff of Laurens County. He also served as a commissioner for the opening navigation of the Saluda River and he represented Laurens in the Thirteenth General Assembly. During the nullification crisis, he was a Unionist. HUGH SAXON resided in Laurens District prior to the Revolutionary War and much of his service was done in North Carolina, Virginia and at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Saxon, according to his son’s filing for his pension, lost considerable property in South Carolina during the war. ALLEN BARKSDALE was a planter, sheriff and a member of the legislature. All three have signed this 2pp, 8 ¼ x 13, March 15, 1839, bond on the estate of Allen Saxon, deceased. Research included.
