Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca Style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A bi-chrome terracotta male hunchback, depicted leaning forward as if gazing at something or someone who is quite mesmerizing, or engaged in a ritualistic pose. His physique is quite amusing with those rather substantial arms and contrastingly attenuated legs. Although nude, he is highly decorated, donning a headdress and braided coiffure, elaborate ear ornaments, and armbands with round appliques. The Ameca style is characterized by an elongated face and a high forehead capped by a turban-like piece of headgear. This figure's eyes are a perfect element exemplifying this style -- wide and staring, with added strips of clay (fillets) around them as exaggerated eyelids. His overall visage is quite arresting with defined high cheekbones, a long pointy nose, and a slight smile that reveals delineated teeth. Size: 8.5" L x 8.25" W x 7.625" H (21.6 cm x 21 cm x 19.4 cm)

Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico. Their physical deformities were embraced as signs that these individuals were chosen and touched by the deities. As a consequence they were oftentimes regarded as powerful, shamanic figures.

Provenance: Ex- Collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, CA
