Large Jalisco Pottery Sheepface Figure - Very Fine

Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A sizeable hand-built terracotta seated figure with both legs bent in front and lengthy arms resting upon rounded knees. His torso showcases a wonderful white-painted textile garment with dotted, linear, and flower-shaped motifs, and a trailing beaded necklace wraps around the figure's thick neck, traversing his chest, and curving upwards after passing underneath one arm. A slender head showcases a rounded chin, a prominent nose with an accompanying nose ring, circular eyes with painted pupils, pointed ears with disc-shaped earspools, and a tall forehead; the forehead is embellished with a thin, vertically-striped headband with two roundels on either side. With a lustrous deep-red ground and bright white painted adornments, this is a stellar figural example from this ancient shaft-tomb culture! Size: 9.25" H (23.5 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
