Description

1865 Abraham Lincoln Mourning Ribbon; Printed silk ribbon with Lincoln portrait reading; "13th WARD." text, and heavy black mourning border. The National Union League of the 13th Ward of Philadelphia Pennsylvania met on April 20, 1865 in response to the assassination of President Lincoln, and the attempted assassination of William and Frederick Seward. In this listing I have included the meetings preamble and resolutions as taken from the US Department of State website "Office of the Historian". Notice that their final resolution was to wear an appropriate badge of mourning, for such length of time as the authorities of the city may direct, in honor of the late Chief Magistrate of the nation, Abraham Lincoln.". Quite possibly this 13th WARD Lincoln mourning ribbon was worn by a member of the National Union League, Philadelphia. Approximate size is 3" x 6".
